Just Think Vol.16: Run's House Reality or Rehearsed?
By A.Evans
http://twitter.com/AdotEVANS

While channel surfing I landed on MTV and to my surprise two new back to back episodes of Run's House were about to air. One of the episodes left me feeling a certain way and propelled me to start a forum on twitter. I wanted to know what others felt about this particular episode and what they thought of Run's House in general. The episode that initiated my twitter forum revolved mainly around JoJo(Rev Run's eldest son) who
was arrested for possession of marijuana. In this particular episode the family gets word that JoJo has been arrested for possession of marijuana, he ends up spending the night in jail before his father is able to get him out. What bothered me a tad bit was the way the family handled the situation or the way it was presented. Instead of seeming
realistic, this episode seemed more like a rehearsed episode of the Brady Bunch or Cosby Show, which got me to thinking, is it possible that Run's House is suffering from the same sickness as other reality shows. Is Run's House becoming watered down due to "scripted reality"?

Mixed Reviews:
After initiating a forum on twitter, I received some amazing feedback, even celebrities were voicing their opinion on this particular episode. Surely there were mixed emotions, some felt Rev Run was more concerned with his image as a Reverend and the wholesome family life he wishes to portray as oppose to being real and accepting the fact that this is
something that teenagers do, especially since he as a Rock Star(never considered him rap) used to partake in drug use as well. Others feel that Rev Run was just being himself and wants to raise his children to abstain from some of the things he used to partake in like most parents.
Some also felt the relationship he has with his family on screen is genuine and thought it was actually cool of him to handle the situation in the manner that he did. I can agree to some extent that playing basketball with your son after he is arrested is pretty cool, however, having your
daughters fly from Los Angeles is a bit of a stretch. I don't condone being arrested, nor am I declaring my stance on marijuana use I just feel that as a parent of an aspiring hip hop artist you should expect alcohol and drug use especially since you and brother were notorious for it. On the
flip side however he is a Reverend and has turned over a new leaf in his life and wants to lead by example, establishing morals and values in his household.

Verdict?
I'm sure if there is one thing everyone in this world can agree on in some way, is that no family could ever be as cookie cutter or as perfect as the Simmons would like us to believe. One has to wonder what would it be like to see this family behind closed doors when the camera isn't rolling. Is this what the modern family looks like or just an attempt to portray what a family should look and act like? After watching American Beauty I find it
hard to believe that there is a family that doesn't have a sprinkle of dysfunction in the midst. What if it were "Your House" what your family look like? Would your life look similar to the Simmons family or the Simpson's? I'm all ears...

Real Talk: Michelle Obama: First Lady or Ghetto Queen

By Cedric D. Shine
http://twitter.com/NativeNotes

"He doesn't seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn't; she is basically a ghetto girl. That's what she says-I'm just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did." quote taken from Black and White on Martha's Vineyard by Toure
The benefit of having your own personal website is that you can sound off on any topic you please. Earlier today when I read the above quote about First Lady Michelle Obama, I wasn't offended, a bit confused maybe. Largely I found myself curious about the mindset of the person quoted on a piece about The Obama's going to Martha's Vineyard for a summer vacation.

I went back and re-read the article in its entirety and a sense of sadness came over me for the "only ones" described in the article. The term refers to affluent black families who are often the only ones in their jobs, schools, and communities because of their level of achievement. Toure makes sure not to call these individuals assmilationists, instead he calls it their ascension, I think there's a bit of both in this "only one' business but that's another topic.

So, Michelle Obama is now considered a "ghetto girl"! Is this the same Michelle Obama who received her bachelors' degree from Princeton University and law degree from Harvard? A counter to that argument would be the old saying that 'you can take the person out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the person.' But what is ghetto?

Being loud and boisterous, guzzling 40oz bottles of malt liquor. Not working and collecting welfare checks for your many children, born out of wedlock to numerous men. Living on section 8 and hiding your significant other when the State comes because only you and your children are supposed to live in said house. I mean, what is ghetto?

The way the term ghetto is loosely used here it seems as if it's based on mere geography. Michelle Obama was brought up on the South Side of Chicago as was Jennifer Hudson, true, so that alone makes them "ghetto girls"? It's this absurd type of thinking that continues to pervert the black community and further divide the haves and the have-nots. The term ghetto historically is a term used for the living quarters of Jewish people but has now morphed into a class structure for people of color. Those who have and those who don't, those who know how to act in public and those who don't, those who are educated and those who are not.

"If you're too Southern Baptist, too dark-skinned, too street, you might not be insulted by a white person but you may be insulted by a black person,"

It's unfortunate that this type of thinking still pervades the thoughts of people of color. Such feelings show that the divisions created during slavery are still embedded in some African Americans. This feeling of superiority that some of the "only ones" hold over their fellow black Americans reminds me of the same feelings white supremacists held over all people of color. It's ironic that blacks fought together for civil rights and now impose the same belittling tactics on their brothers and sisters who are less fortunate.

Not all people who vacation at Martha's Vineyard are the bourgeoisie, black high life described in the aforementioned article. My aunt and uncle own a vacation home at the Vineyard and will be extremely angry when they read this and see themselves and their friends being portrayed in this uppity, better than thou, elitist negro light.

For the record Michelle Obama grew up in a two-parent household where her father got up and went to work every day despite his debilitating illness. Her mother ingrained a strong work ethic into Michelle and her older brother so that they would both be successful in their academic pursuits and professional lives. The result is a proud black woman, who is an extraordinary person who has been educated at the finest institutions this country has to offer, a woman who has worked tirelessly to uplift her community and to hear President Obama tell it, one heck of a mother to her children. Not too shabby if I do say so myself and definitely not ghetto!

Atlanta Rapper LT, who in his early years was dubbed "Lil Third" (James White III) for continuing the cycle after his biological father and grandfather, is unabashedly not among the norm. Raised in Newnan GA, the son of a preacher, LT aka Spote learned he had an artistic side at the age of nine. However, with little to no supervision, LT found his way into more trouble than he could handle and at age 21 was sentenced to do a two year bid in prison.

Fortunately, upon his release, LT and relative Boo Man were able to establish their independent label - Street Fame Major Money Entertainment. - While already being proclaimed the next biggest star out of the south, LT is as humble as ever about his current situation "I don't really get caught up in the hype, I just make good music that people can relate to" says LT. As such, LT is set to return to form with a new street album, "Infatuated With Money" hosted by Atlanta's "go to" dj, DJ Infamous and boasting tracks from Multi-Platinum and Grammy Nominated producer Shawty Redd and heavyweight hit makers Dun Deal and MJ.

With a May 2009 release date as of press time, hit singles "Block Party" and "Prototype" have already begun to turn heads on the airwaves and of course, in the streets!
