Just Think Vol.14: Death of Auto Tune?
By A.Evans
http://twitter.com/AdotEVANS

If you turn on the radio or if you are familiar with any of the latest songs that are in rotation you probably hear a certain sound that is in most of the music these days. From T-Pain to Jamie Fox auto tune has been force fed to us at an alarming rate. This synthesized sound has been around for ages since the days of George Clinton, to Teddy Riley to today's outrageous usage. It seems today auto tune has either become a requirement to make a hit single or everyone just feels the need to use it in order to make a fast buck. If that is the case then artistry is truly dead, music or artistic expression turned to conformity is tragic. Kanye, T-Pain, and Lil Wayne have definitely delivered home runs while using auto tone, but one has to wonder when does the use of a particular sound become too much? When do hip hop fans say enough? When do the artists get tired of it? When does music become music again?

When does Auto Tune die?

Jay Z Speaks Out
By now we have all heard the song "Death of Auto Tune" and we have all heard the interviews with Jay-Z publicly displaying his stance on the usage of auto tune. It appears Jay feels the same way that most hip hop fans feel and that is; "Every record doesn't NEED auto tone". The fact that a song titled "Death of Auto Tune" can be released on Friday and have the entire world going crazy by Sunday is a clear indication that hip hop is possibly ready for a change. Jay Z addresses his stance by indicating how he feels the saturation is becoming like all overstretched trends, in one word corny. T-Pain, Wayne, and Kanye were all given credit by Jay for making great music using auto tone, however, when every artist decides to use it the added value auto tone can bring for some begins to diminish. Though it appears some are pleased with Jay addressing a pretty valid issue there are plenty who are aggravated and annoyed and feel Jay is trying to draw attention to himself, which makes me wonder is the anti auto tone movement a valid statement or a just another stunt?

What Now?
The anti auto tone movement is definitely a wrench in the agenda of some artist and label execs. We all must wonder; what does the up and coming artist do if auto tone was part of their formula? What are they going to do now? Does the artist go back to the drawing board or is it too late? If auto tone becomes something considered played out will anyone still use it? How will this usage or non usage affect the feedback of released songs now? Maybe artistry will become artistry again. Maybe this movement will enable up and coming artist to finally be themselves and make music they love as opposed to a mechanical mundane single as a mere way of making money, it is called "Show Business" but when the business impairs the show certain aspects need to be revoked. What's your stance?

New Apple IPhone Unveiled

Apple on Monday opens its annual Worldwide Developer's Conference in San Francisco, where tech analysts expect the company to tout its new iPhone 3.0 software, and a new iPhone. It will also preview the next version of its operating system for Mac computers, OS X Snow Leopard.

Apple is facing renewed competition from rival Palm, which starts selling its brand new - and well-received - Palm Pre Smartphone during the weekend with exclusive partner Sprint.

"They had to come out with a new iPhone now, to one-up the Pre," says Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray. Munster expects mid-July availability for any new iPhone. He also expects tiered pricing, with an entry level model available for $149 (down from the current $199) and a premium phone with a video camera and higher capacity storage for $299.

The latest iPhone software, to be introduced this summer as a free upgrade (or $9.95 for folks who own Apple's iPod Touch media player) offers such enhancements as the ability to cut and paste web pages, and send MMS text messages with photos.

Real Talk: START SNITCHING Pt. 1
By Cedric D. Shine
http://twitter.com/NativeNotes

We see it glorified in old mob flicks, rap records hail it as the sin of all sins; the number one code of the streets; "don't snitch". LOYALTY, I understand the concept very well, but when does it border stupidity and become a cause in fact of the violence and destruction of our neighborhoods. The "Stop Snitching Campaign" was subliminally etched into our minds long before the celebrated t-shirts with stop signs and the word snitching embedded within. Well please forgive me, for I am about to break the ultimate code of honor, I'm about to become the rat of all rats, because my charge for us as a community is to... "START SNITCHING".

There, I said it, START SNITCHING, start snitching if you want your children to live past their elementary school graduation. Start Snitching if you want to stop living in fear as you walk to the corner store. As a people African Americans have a strong distrust for law enforcement, but can you blame them after seeing many of their leaders crippled by this system of American Justice. We vividly remember news clips of the Civil Rights Era, watching police officers brutally attack people of color with water hoses and K-9 dogs? Many of us can attest to the "random" car stops, the harassment and brutality that our people face on a daily basis from those who are supposed to protect and serve. Yet I still say START SNITCHING, for far too many of our children are becoming victims in the crossfire of drug wars, domestic disputes and other various forms of crime that begat violence.

What do you tell a mother who just lost her 6-year-old child to gun violence and you know what happened? What do we put on your grave when you're no longer here, "here lies a good man cause he wasn't no snitch". No, more like here lies a coward who was too afraid to take ownership of his community and protect the lives around him. Now you're thinking, "I'm not snitching because then they are going to come and get me". I agree, and sadly once again law enforcement does an awful job at protecting those who come forward with the truth. However I challenge you to put truth to the theory that there is power in numbers. If communities come together and take a stand, maybe we can combat these types of atrocities. We can put pressure on the legislators to create better programs for those who come forward, put pressure on city hall to allocate sufficient funds to city's police departments for such programs. Once we become aware of our power we won't have to live in fear, we will begin to think for the system and have our thoughts implemented, as they should be in the first place. We elect, key word "elect" public officials, they are in their positions to serve us. So if we don't feel safe it is our duty to get that message across to those who we have elected to make us feel protected. We can employ "effective snitching" by going to city council meetings, arranging town hall meetings and charging elected officials with doing their job and implementing programs that will make our streets safer. Our taxes are what pay the salaries of these elected officials and law enforcement personnel, so essentially they work for us, its time that we demand that they produce results!

I'm talking about taking a stand for the well being of the children we are raising. People know exactly what goes on around their neighborhoods from violence to drug dealing and they even know what times it is more probable that these crimes occur. Effective snitching means as a community going to these elected officials and providing them with this information, demanding that they not only look at the information but that they create a plan of action to address it. Jail time is supposed to serve as a deterrent for crimes committed, meaning if you do the crime you do the time. By not snitching and taking a blind eye to the crimes within our neighborhoods, we are sending young men and women the message that what they're doing is right and will be tolerated. We're saying there's no reason to think before you act because no one is going to tell so you don't have to worry about prison time, thus continuing the cycle of crime. No wonder the murder rates are so high, we have sent a message that people can be killed and we will protect the killers by keeping silent. START SNITCHING, effective snitching, lets be a catalyst for the change that we wish to see in our communities. Let's Make It Happen!

La Familia: SEX IS A SPIRITUAL EXCURSION
By Shelli Tinae Price

www.themindofshellitinae.blogspot.com
All of our true desires are spiritual and our bodies are just vehicles to accomplish them, therefore even sex is a spiritual excursion. Trust me, your spirit is not looking for sex but rather a connection so deep, so intense, that you and your mate can move a mountain when your energies collide.

Last night on our radio show, "Straight Talk with Ella Bleu," our guest Erik Gordon said dating is all about SEX and that basically relationships begin and end with the mighty power of sex.
I think he's partially right but sex for the sake of penetration is a means to cover-up some deep seeded issues. Sex becomes a distraction so you don't have to deal with what you really want...which is ever lasting love. I think the problem is a lot of us don't even feel true love exists and have just given up somewhere along the say. Men have it the worst because they are taught the abuse of sex is a macho birthright but our gift from God is LOVE - not sex. You're spirit didn't travel light years to be right here, right now just to bust a... well you know what I'm getting at.

Hey, have sex like jackrabbits all you want - I'm not judging but instead I'm saying be mindful of your distractions vs. your spiritual desires but keep in mind awareness means you have greater responsibility. I've been there, done that, I'm definitely not a saint but the key is being aware of where you're at in your life and setting your sights on higher plateau's for the future.

So tell me, what are your spiritual desires? AND if sex is a spiritual excursion...how are you going to get there?

Artist On the rise:
ERK THA JERK

Erk Tha Jerk is not your every day, ordinary rap artist. In an era where the majority of artists are all sounding the same, looking the same, and doing the same things, Erk stands out as a real one of a kind artist. At first glance, you would not assume that Erk was a rapper/producer/songwriter, but with his trademark glasses, wit, and laid back persona, he brings something that your average music listener can embrace and relate to. He explains, "Being myself is a must. That's the kind of music I make. Real sh*t. I don't feel the same every day. Some days I'm on my get money sh*t, then the next I'm on my chill at home sh*t. I just make sure everybody can relate".

In 2003 Erk joined an up and coming group, Kali Fam. The group enjoyed national success and respectable record sales, but after they returned home from tour, Kali Fam decided to go it's separate ways, leaving Erk free to pursue a solo career. Erk found that finding credible production to accompany his lyrics would not be an easy task, which led him to start teaching himself the art of making beats. After some time, Erk's production talents had become quite formidable, and he produced all of his own work, and other artists began seeking him out to produce their work as well.

Even though his status as a producer was growing, his heart has always been in his raps. In late 2007, he dropped "The Hood Nerd" mixtape, which created some buzz around him as an artist, and got the streets talking. The song "Dont Need Em" became a favorite of DJ's and listeners, and has been getting significant plays on 106.1 KMEL. In order to capitalize off the building buzz, Erk released "The Hood Nerd EP" exclusively on Itunes featuring the hit song "Dont Need Em", which is a precursor to an upcoming album, which is in the making.

In June 2008, Erk released "Im So Dumb" which is a witty, comedic song satirizing the "Hyphy Movement", and effectively pronouncing it dead. The song has been receiving praise from all over the region for its blunt honesty, and has been considered a long overdue message by many of the most powerful figures and artists in the local scene. In 2009, Erk collaborated with Bay Area Legend Too $hort on the new single "Plane in The Air", further establishing his ability to make hit songs. His lyrical talents and vibrant personality are evident in the song, and has every one talking about Erk Tha Jerk. You can expect Erk to do what he does best, "Make hit music for real people".

Just Think Vol.13: The Face
By A.Evans
http://twitter.com/AdotEVANS

For lucky article number 13, I would like to take a different approach from my usual food for thought selection, and share with you all a more poetic form of writing, a more personal form of writing as a mere expression of gratitude for all of the amazing feedback. The piece below is an excerpt from my personal blog site "ADOTEVANS.com" as always I'm eager to discover What You All Think?

So I'm sitting listening to The Dream Love vs Money and immediately someone comes to mind...I ignore it for a while, but then this face enters my frontal lobe. Now this song called "Fancy" comes on and poof the face appears again, and once again I ignore it. Or at least I try to...The face is faint its just a silhouette, the silhouette transforms into random scenes, random scenarios like a movie...{background music} "...Fancy, Live Fancy...."
I see the face singing this song I see the face again and again I begin drifting...(A don't do it !!!!)

Too late; my imagination is getting the best of me I'm there...I begin to fancy this face. The more I drift, the face becomes clearer, everything is gray like we're inside of a cloud and the lights are dim. There is a subtle darkness except this face...Hands reach out from the gray abyss and pulls me in, now the face smiles and light surrounds us like an aura or halo. This face has me floating effortlessly like the contents of a lava lamp as the music plays "Live Fancy...live Fancy"

...Lightening with no thunder, just the flashes and flickers of light as I float farther and father eye to eye with this face, time isn't a factor, I'm seeing moments of happiness with out the audio just this face....the track changes "Right Side of My Brain" plays the face fades, I'm struggling to see it, the light gets dim and dim and dim until I can only make out the eyes...eyes, they tell a story, these eyes read happiness, disappointment, resentment, anger and love...

I blink the face is gone..."I shoulda been using the right side of my brain"

A void enters or resurfaces, something is missing, this face has left me feeling empty....crowded rooms, nightclubs, bars, great company, still the void lingers...I play fancy again in hopes that this face will return....nope...Emptiness & Loneliness consume my interior though my exterior is always cool, calm, and collective...searching for a way back to this face N.E.R.D status, falling from the cloud...falling...falling..... no safety net...back to reality...BACK TO THE BOOTH !!!!

My shortcomings, mistakes, and pain is my motivation .... all those things summed up is the face that I see everyday...

Real Talk: What it means to be a NI**ER

Last year I sat and watched the red carpet section of the Grammy's when I saw my fellow Virgo grace the camera with his wife donning a t-shirt that said "NIGGER". Wait a minute rewind that back, I saw Nasir Jones better known as "Nas" and a group of supporters of different ethnicities in NIGGER Fashion. This is clearly a sign that the times have changed, television has become so liberal when I was a child they would have blurred out the image to say the least. Nas was interviewed about his "message", there were no censors over the word and things went relatively normal. I mentioned earlier that Nas is a Virgo because they are the thinkers of the zodiac and very strategic in their movements, so maybe Nas is titled his album NIGGER grappling after the publicity that it caused so that we can have intelligent discourses like the one we are about to have.

Wait one second, before you lose interest in fear that I am about take you on a historical voyage enduring the plight of black people and the socialization of the term Nigger and how we need to accept the term to empower ourselves, I promise you I will not. This is not the typical discussion of whether this is a term of endearment or mental slavery. But to understand what I am interested in the concept of the term nigger we must first look to one of the great writers of the Harlem Renaissance, James Baldwin.

Baldwin says, "What white people have to do is try to find out in their own hearts why it was necessary to have a nigger in the first place. Because I'm not a nigger, I'm a man! But if you think I'm a nigger it means you need it. If I'm not the nigger here and you, the white people invented him then you've got to find out why?"

Baldwin paints us such a vivid picture when he speaks about the system needing a nigger. You see the term nigger is about an institutionalized inferiority complex. The system, those proponents of white supremacy need a nigger to belittle, they need a nigger to make themselves feel better than because they lack self-esteem. The nigger is needed in order to perpetuate systems of control, a hierarchy within this great land from sea to shining sea. Unfortunately today the term nigger has become synonymous with black people. However this is not the case, this is not the fate of black people; this has been the position of various ethnic groups in America. I will chronicle the stories of three niggers who have been bastardized by a system of oppression and blatant racism in this country without ever painting the picture of a black face!

If you are of Middle Eastern decent, or even look like you could possibly be of the Islamic faith after 9/11, I regret to inform you but the United States has declared you a NIGGER! Your rights were stripped from you; you became the victims of police brutality, random searches and seizure, and you are always pulled aside at the airport for more questioning. Why is this; because you fit the "description", you look suspicious? But none of this is true; it is merely the pigment of your skin and the religious affiliation that you are suspected of practicing which garners you such attention. You watch your faith and belief system ridiculed daily on television, you have become the butt of all jokes. You're fearful when your children go to school because other children will torment them; forgive them for they know not what they do. You came to this country with hopes of reaching the American dream however you are now living the American nightmare! The ultimate insult is no longer to be black but it is to be Muslim. Your beautiful, peaceful culture has been tainted by slander; you are now judged by the few who make it tough for the many. Welcome!

La Familia: APHRODISIAC SCENTS

By Shelli Tinae Price
http://twitter.com/ShelliTinae
www.themindofshellitinae.blogspot.com
One of the strongest of the 5 senses is the sense of smell. Our nose has the exotic ability to pick up a scent and tap into our memory and our strongest desires. My favorite scent is of a man, of course, but an untapped man; no perfumes to cover up his pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals released by living organisms to send messages to beings of the same species. Have you ever noticed someone's natural scents just seemed uncannily familiar and safe to you?

In an article on suite101.com called, "Love, Sex and the Sense of Smell," it says studies on the role of aromas in attractiveness and romance have found that:
· women prefer the smell of men whose genetics are similar but not too similar to their own
· men prefer women's body odor during the time of the month when they are fertile

I find it very intriguing that we pick up scents on a genetic level. It means we have the ability to detect someone's energy just from their natural fragrance. That natural scent is an aphrodisiac, exciting you on such a subtle level that you may never even recognize what turned you on.

A lot of people have the misconception that they need to go out and buy expensive perfumes or colognes but if a person picks up your scent it will be from your natural odor. Have you ever tried on the same perfume as someone but it didn't smell the same on you as it did them? That's because your body chemistry is unique and distinct...waiting for the right person to catch a whiff.

Tip:
Try putting on scents that enhance your natural pheromones and don't over power them. Some aphrodisiac educing oils are jasmine, neroli, sandalwood, ylang ylang and my favorite...lavender. Try a dab of one of these oils in just the right places and you'll be sure to get a rise from your mate.

Just Think Vol.12: Love: Fantasy Vs. Reality
By A.Evans
http://twitter.com/AdotEVANS

After numerous hours of force fed celebrity gossip and countless episodes of "Love" reality shows, I find myself pondering on the idealized concept of love and how it is portrayed through television, music, and film. At one time or another we all have asked ourselves "What is Love?"

What does it look like, what does is feel like, and how do we know when we have found it? It appears some of us seek a love that does not exist or maybe it's the concept of love portrayed through television, music, and film that leads us to look in places for something that was never there to begin with. Or, maybe these various expressions of love enable us to identify what may come remotely close to our own experiences. Let us explore fantasy love vs. real love.

The Illusion of Love

Television, Music, and Film all provide us with different perspectives of love; and how to express our feelings. From a Kay Jeweler commercial to a song by Method Man and Mary J Blige, love is portrayed in numerous ways; some of which we can relate to and identify with, while others are just a fantasy that we begin seeking, wanting to experience. Movies and music videos tend to have the largest impact when it comes to generating a conceived notion of what love is. Films such as Maid in Manhattan, definitely endorses the concept that romantic gestures occur through a montage of "wine and dine" tactics to indicate adoration of one's counterpart. Like most romance films, the concept of love or how it is shown always seems to be measured upon a grand act. Now there are people who can relate to and re-enact these scenarios, which in essence are illusions created to make one actually believe that this is indeed love. The question that comes to mind is; What about the couples that are unable to re-enact these illusions, is love not present in their relationship? What happens when one feels that their relationship is inadequate according to the standards of a T.I video or Jennifer Lopez movie?

Reality Check

Where is a line drawn between fantasy and reality? When does love not require definition or explanation? If the concept of love is measured by anything presented on television, what happens when the acts become repetitive? What happens when these acts become insufficient to make one happy? Are new concepts derived are new acts developed? I guess the dualistic nature of love in essence is a little bit of reality and fantasy. It takes patience and creativity to make the relationship work, but in the end, it's left up to us to determine exactly what that is.

Real Talk:Moving Past The Exception
By Cedric D. Shine
http://twitter.com/NativeNotes
To whom much is given, much is expected.
This past week we were afforded the opportunity to bear witness to a monumental moment in the history of the United States of America. We watched the first African American President, Barack Obama nominate the first Latino woman Judge, Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land and Judge Sotomayor's nomination for appointment is another sign that change is coming to America.

Coming because although America has a black President and a future Latino woman Justice on the Supreme Court, blacks and browns in America continue to be imprisioned at an alarming rate. Judge Sotomayor is the daughter of a single mother, raised in one of New York City's toughest housing projects in the Bronx. Her personal background resembles a similar profile to those of the black / brown men and women who populate our prisons. Judge Sotomayor defeated the odds set against her, and has been educated at some of the best universities this country has to offer. However I am sure she holds a deep concern for those individuals who grew up in public housing just like her who never made it out the maze of the projects' drugs and violence.

A new day is coming; young girls no matter what their color can look to Justice Sotomayor and know that they too can beat the odds and become just as successful as she has become. I say a change is coming because right now Barack Obama and Judge Sotomayor are exceptional people who have accomplished extraordinary things, however they are still the exception to the rule. Far too many young men and women of color are succumbing to the violence and drug trade that plagues their communities. Instead of going to college, these young men and women are going to jail.

While this is a historic moment people of color must not get too caught up in celebrating. Instead I urge people of color to look deep within themselves and understand that some of the same experiences that have shaped these two individuals have been present in their own lives. Take those experiences of being a minority, of feeling different and use them as fuel to excel in every endeavor you embark upon. Parents, local community leaders and everyone who lives in communities of color must work together to create a sense of urgency to produce more and more exceptions to the rules until it's no longer an exception; it will be the norm. Then and only then can we say change has come to America, because there have always been a minority of exceptional people of color, now we have the task of making that minority a majority. YES WE CAN!

JAMES: went to door 44 a few weeks ago and it was hot and the women were hot looking but poor quality because I was hit up for rent money, brake pads, etc...
SHELLI: WTF, serious? that always happens to u
JAMES: I know..why do u think so
SHELLI: Do you put your financial biz out there?
JAMES: nah....just younger women I guess. They tend to have more issues.
SHELLI: The problem with women is they don't realize a man is supposed to take care of you for life...but you can scare him away if you don't play your position right early on
JAMES: Yep...I don't mind spending but if u ask too soon it's a big turnoff
*The above is an actual conversation (his real name has been protected)
First of all ladies let me say: A man doesn't owe you anything. Period! Never go to a bar with an empty wallet; never ask a man you barely know for money. Men are innately equipped with the "take care of your woman" gene. Aside from getting his paper right, there is nothing a man wants more than to provide for his family. You can't be that woman over night. Again let me restate the problem: WOMEN DON'T REALIZE IT'S A MAN'S JOB TO TAKE CARE OF US FOR LIFE.

The recommendation: Ladies, stop acting so damn THIRSTY! Fostering a lasting relationship with a man takes time and patience. Short term, yes you might get your rent paid or new break pads, but you won't get the ring (or whatever your long term relationship goal is). Look for more than just a short term peak of your goodies.

I might get heat from this, but even if you aren't looking for a relationship you can have six men taking care of you at once but you still gotta play your cards right and asking for too much too soon ain't how you get there.

The THIRSTY finish last.
