Just Think Vol 44: Keeping Up With The Joneses
by A.EVANS

Disclaimer: As always, I write these articles to stimulate minds and to get the thought process in motion.... Please read the disclaimer twice on this article.
We all have done it at one point in our life, we may not do it anymore, but we have at one point or another used our peers, siblings, and associates as a standard or focal point or comparison to know where we stand. Keeping up with the Joneses does not just exist within our respected communities and circles it exists all around us from Fashion, to Sports, to Twitter trending topics, to our language; we strive to keep up with whatever is the newest or next. Music is a clear indication of how as a society we attempt to Keep up with the Joneses, without even knowing it at times. We all want to be the first up on something, we all want to be the best, and we want to appear to be the illest. So in theory not only are we trying to Keep Up With The Joneses we want the Joneses to keep up with us. This week I want to discuss the possibilities of trying to keep up with the masses via Twitter, Facebook, etc... When does it become excessive and false?
Be A Leader... (As in An Individual as in YOURSELF)
It is extremely easy to be a follower, but takes strength to be a leader, to set your own pace, and to be your own person. What I mean by being your own person has nothing to do with anyone else other than yourself (obviously). Cynicism and sarcasm is necessary for the sake of getting my point of across, because at times we may do things, say things, or carry ourselves a certain way for the sake of appearing in a certain light in the eyes of others. We tend to hold the opinions of those close to us dear, sometimes the opinions of complete strangers as well. We may not all want to admit that, but I truly believe that statement holds some sort of truth behind it.
We post Twitter comments and Facebook updates as a reflection of what's going on in our life, where we are, who we are, and what we are doing; Lets keep it 100... Are we always saying these things because they are a complete reflection of who we are, or are we doing it to appear a certain way or in a certain light and attract a certain response or reaction? Are we trying to keep up with the Joneses or have the Joneses keep up with us? Ask yourself... Does the world really need to know if you are in a power meeting or are you saying it to keep up your image as a mogul, model, artist etc? Does everyone need to know that you have memorized the entire book of Psalms even though you were doing some things even Jesus wouldn't do the night before? Do we develop caricatures and include an entire personality and script on our internet profiles? Are we being completely honest with ourselves? Are we being leaders or followers or a little bit of both? Does Tweeting and providing Facebook updates empower the real us or the us we would like to be seen as, or is there a fine line that merges the two?
Twitter: Fantasy/Fallacy, or Empowerment?
As I write this piece I'm reading tweets on the time-line and it seems a lot of people tweet about their superiority or supremacy or dopeness( I've done it too). Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I do however, feel it supports my theory that we tweet certain things to appear in a certain light, either that or we use twitter for the sole purpose of marketing ourselves, in essence "Keeping up with the Joneses"(Not all of us). There are other theories I have pertaining to the whole " look at me" fiasco on Twitter, maybe people write certain things to feel important. Twitter does enable followers to feel like leaders. I mean think about it you don't have readers, members, or subscribers on Twitter you have followers, so maybe tweeting about our greatness enables us to feel powerful, keep up with the masses and keep our caricatures alive in the eyes of others(Making the Joneses keep up with you). So is it possible that Twitter provides a platform of motivation or does it cater to a fantasy/fallacy or is it all of the above? What do you tweet about? Are you tweeting about your life, funny things, or are you using twitter as a marketing tool that enhances your appearance in the eyes of others or are you really about business and not bullshit?
Final Thoughts
Try not to get defensive when reading these articles, I just speak food for thought and call it like I see it. I speak on things that I wonder about and I'm sure some of you ponder on as well. I'm sure you have all read a tweet from someone and said "Who Cares?" We all can take a brief second and really look at what we tweet and what our updates are about, and ask ourselves does everybody really need to know this or DO I NEED for this to be known? If you are true to yourself you'll find the honest answer, instead of keeping up with the Masses, Joneses, or having them keep up with us, let's try keeping up with ourselves, our REAL SELVES....As Always

Marketing Buzz:Don't Text And Drive
By Steve Canal

Texting and driving can have serious consequences. That's the message of a new campaign being rolled out by AT&T this week that says, "Txting & Drivng ... It Can Wait."
The national effort, by BBDO, New York, and BBDO, Atlanta, seeks to raise awareness, especially among younger drivers, about the risks of texting and driving. Ads show true stories about texting that changed or ended people's lives. For example, one TV spot shows the text "Where u at?" while a woman says, "This is the text my daughter was reading when she drove into oncoming traffic," along with the message: "No text is worth dying over."
The campaign, which will be rolled out over the next few months, will include print, radio and online in addition to TV. It will also use in-store signage, collateral and online billing. As part of the effort, AT&T has launched an online resource center, with information and pledges for parents and teens, and a Facebook app that friends can share to encourage each other to take the pledge not to text and drive. AT&T plans to promote the pledge with a "twitition" on Twitter and users can follow the effort via @ShareATT.

La Familia: I Text You To Death
By Shelli Tinae Price
La Familia Blogspot
We are so inundated with the speed of transmitting information that the meaning and validity of the messages are lost in transmission.
People will text each other to death before they love each other to death. I don't care what anyone says, if you have the time to text, you have the time to call. Now of course no one can deny how convenient texting is and how very useful it is in situations like just letting someone know you're on your way to meet them or just to say hello. What I refer to as text death are for those of us who build relationships via text. The irony is we are texting....on a phone, the very phone that was designed...to talk on. No text can replace the sound and vibration of a persons voice.
Now, I've always preferred typing over talking. Remember the skytel two-ways from back in the day? I absolutely loved that little gadget but at that time only those of us in the entertainment field and the entertainment wanna-be's had one. In fact, the word "texting" hadn't even been coined. We were just happy to meet people with them so we could "beam" our contact information to one another. I was only able to contact those in my circle as the rest of the world was still getting acclimated to email and analog cell phones.
Now I'm having people text me books that come in 3-parts; expressing ambiguous thoughts and I can't tell if they are legit or bogus; using acronyms that I have to google to discover its connotation before I can even respond; getting dirty jokes that come equipped with perverted photos; and my favorite are the texts from men I haven't talked to in 2 years who just want to spark a text conversation.
I had dinner with a friend yesterday and her phone rang from a guy she's been, for lack of a better word, "text dating," and she didn't know what do. She let her phone go to voicemail to buy herself time to try to decipher what a call from him might mean. Does he want something? At this point his very voice is unfamiliar.
Again, I'm all for texting but texting can be abused.
Here are some texting DON'TS:
DON'T CONTACT A PERSON FOR THE FIRST TIME VIA TEXT. CALLING SHOWS INTEREST, TEXTING INDICATES YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW THE PERSON.
DON'T SAY I LOVE YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME VIA TEXT. MATTERS OF THE HEART SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN PERSON OR LAST RESORT WOULD BE TO VERBALLY EXPRESS YOUR FEELINGS OVER TELEPHONE.
DON'T TEXT A QUESTION IN ANGER, THAT COULD GO ON FOR 12 HRS INSTEAD OF A 12 MINUTE CONVERSATION. BESIDES, IT FEELS BETTER TO BITCH ALOUD.
DON'T EXPECT A RESPONSE IF YOU DIDN'T ASK A QUESTION. THE PERSON IS NOT OBLIGATED TO RESPOND TO COMMENTS SO DON'T KEEP CHECKING YOUR PHONE WAITING ON A REPLY.
Now that you are well versed on some texting etiquette please say this aloud:
ON MY HONOR, I WILL TEXT RESPONSIBLY. I WILL "MAN-UP (OR WOMAN UP)" AND CALL AND NOT HIDE BEHIND MY TEXT MESSAGES. ON MY HONOR, TEXTING WILL NOT SUBSTITUTE VERBAL COMMUNICATION.
Remember That?

Old School Cell Phones

We all have one, it is the most essential device in our lives, it serves as our support system our wallet our link to the world our secretary and marketing company. Cell phones do everything from text to twitter, "to flipping your pancakes" - George Carlin. Remember when they didn't do all the wonderful things they do now, remember when everyone didn't have a cell phone? If you had a cell phone back in the day you were either a doctor, lawyer, or stock broker, or just some rich guy who wanted to look cool. Remember when the size of a cell phone was practically the size of your leg, circa Zach Morris?
The first cell phone introduced to the urban community would probably have to be the Ericson, remember it was believed to cause brain tumors or cancer? Remember wanting one so bad you'd save all your money to get one and only had 5 people you could really call with it? As we evolved and made technological advances the cell phone become sleeker, the next real break thru for cell phones was probably the Startac Motorola, this was around the time more and more people began having cellular phones, I'd say around 95, 96 that's when high school students began carrying them around "in case of emergencies" and since then we have never looked back. In 2010 we have all types of cell phones with unique features and looks designed to fit our different personalities and styles, but can you imagine if there weren't any advances in technology and people were walking around with the Zach Morris phone today? Imagine trying to get on an airplane with one of those lol you're definitely not making your flight .
